Driving Skills Evaluation

After I retired, I became ill and didn’t leave my home for several years. When I finally felt up to going out and driving again, I found my car had died (it was over 14 years old). Now I want to buy a new car but feel I should have some refresher training before doing so. I remember years ago after major surgery it took a while before I felt comfortable driving again.

Since it has now been several years since I last drove, I would like to find some place where I can drive around (like in a parking lot), but I wouldn’t even have a car of my own to do this with. My car is too old to fix, and I want a new one. However, I would worry about even attempting a test drive in a new car until I can get that special “feel” back that I once had.

I am confident about driving again, but I would really like some place to test drive and a car to do it in. Do you offer such a service? If I don’t find some way to drive again, I fear I will remain a prisoner in my own home, which is the way I currently feel. I hope you can help me. I had been a member of AAA for many years until I recently realized wasn’t getting any use out of it since I wasn’t driving!

Because you want to be a safe driver as long as possible, it’s great that you are considering taking a refresher course.  You are likely looking for a driving skills evaluation, which includes an in-car evaluation of your driving abilities and a recommendation regarding any further specialized drivers’ training. These vary from state to state, some locations have ‘student driver’ vehicles that can be used (versus your own vehicle). In what part of CT are you located? Once we have that info, we can better direct you to the proper place. Please send your reply to:
