Discussing driving with my dad

When preparing to discuss driving with my dad, should I try to talk with his doctor?

Your dad’s physician can provide important perspective on your concerns, due to his special knowledge of your dad’s overall health, but you should also be respectful of your dad’s privacy and understand that physicians are bound by privacy regulations. If you’d like to talk with the doctor, consider going with your dad to his next appointment. It will give you an opportunity to observe your dad’s driving performance, and once you arrive, you can ask a few questions of your own. There might be circumstances when speaking to your dad’s physician without permission would be appropriate, such as if you’ve already tried several times to discuss driving and your dad will not participate, or if driving is so poor that public safety must take priority. But, if you can ask permission first, it’s the more respectful thing to do.
